What is a Bible reading?
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:42)
But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them… (II Timothy 3:14)
The Bible reading provides, in a regular meeting of the assembly, an open yet structured means to study a passage of Scripture together. Several brothers participate in the discussion. Some brothers, usually two, serve as facilitators and moderators for the study. All participants are expected to prepare ahead of time. Brothers should be willing to contribute as the Lord leads to the discussion of the biblical passage under consideration.
We have been holding Bible readings on a regular basis at Keystone Bible Chapel for about two years. During that time, we have systematically studied Paul's epistles to Titus and Philemon, and the epistles of James, Peter, John, and Jude. In the Old Testament, we have studied Ruth. Recently (mid-October 2002), we completed a study of the old covenant sacrifices (burnt offering, grain offering, peace offering, etc.) as described in the opening chapters of Leviticus. We especially tried to discern how each offering typifies the person and work of our Lord Jesus. Beginning on October 27, Lord willing, we will consider the "feasts of Jehovah" (holy convocations) of Leviticus 23.
Responsibilities of the facilitators
To lead the discussion,
particularly by introducing and summarizing the passage.
To keep the discussion moving
through the passage.
To provide material in
advance to help participants prepare for the next study.
Benefits of the Bible reading
Encourages all
believers (not just a select few) to study the Scriptures.
Provides a venue for brothers
to speak what the Lord has laid on their heart.
Encourages younger
brothers to study and participate. (Less intimidating than pulpit ministry.)
Provides an opportunity and
an atmosphere for open discussion of the Scriptures.
We hope that diligent Bible study, and our regularly coming together as an assembly to discuss biblical things, will help everyone to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ our Saviour. To God be the glory!
